by Frankie Koeller ![]() Chapter 1 - Its All About the Music OK, So the owner of a local bar asks you if you want to "spin " records on Wednesday night. You say "sure that sounds great!" Free drinks, play the music you want, and you'll get paid $40 at the end of the night. It's a win-win-win situation. Hmmmm...but what kind of music should I play? It's punk night on Monday with the usual 30ish krusty crowd who still smell like Telegraph Ave. urine but now have two kids. Tuesday night is the "hey I have all the DJ Shadow original samples night" where the DJ exposes all those ultra rare funky tracks that make people say to themselves..."so that's where that's from." Thursday night is some burn out who loves playing Motley Crue, AC/DC, and the punk version of "I Think We're Alone Now" that Tiffany already ruined. Friday and Saturday are just revolving local radio station DJ's who either think an 80's night sounds new and original or playing 60's Persian TV show themes will open people's minds' to "new music". So what are you gonna play? Well, isn't it obvious? A little of this and a little of that. And every once in a while throw in a DJ Shadow sample for good measure. Chapter 2 - Being in a Booth or Down on the Dance Floor Having the turntables down near the bar seems like a great idea. You can always throw on a remix and go take a piss, or go outside to have a smoke. The bar is right there so getting the attention of the bartender is quick and easy. But you're amongst all the annoying people who want to tell you about this great Brothers Johnson CD they have in their car and if it would be OK if they went outside and got it for you to play. Say what?! "Do you have the new Rage Against the Machine? No? Well do you have any Rage Against the Machine?" Are you kidding me? This shit has actually happened to me. To be honest the booth is sounding better and better. Conclusion Playing your favorite songs for your friends can be very enjoyable. Granted after hearing the same songs every week you'll never ever want to hear them at home again. But many people DJ at bars, dance clubs, weddings and make a profitable living from it. ![]() Next Week: Making The Flyer/What To Wear! bullied by jamie flam on 8/7/2002 :: Hey Boys! bullied by Billy Bananas on 8/7/2002 :: ![]() As a lifelong Laker fan, this week's loss of Chick Hearn is tremendous. Even though his erroneous calls have seemed to outnumber his good ones in the past couple years, he has been far more entertaining than Bob Costas or Steve "Snapper" (Snapper?) Jones . He is a legend and he will truly be missed. To sum up how much he meant to Los Angeles and the world, here is a clip from sportsillustrated.com: "[Hearn] has been immortalized with a star on Hollywood's "Walk of Fame," and appeared as himself numerous times on television shows -- including the TV movie The Harlem Globetrotters on Gilligan's Island. And he hosted the TV show Bowling for Dollars. ![]() ![]() **TOTALLY TUBULAR TRIVIA!!! Did you know that this is not the first time that the words immortalized and The Harlem Globetrotters on Gilligan's Island have been used in the same sentence? In 1991, superstar actor turned devout Christian Gary Busey utterred the following during an intense 3 day coke binge:"What's going on, man...fuck that! Here I am in Harlem, Aspen, Encino, [globe] trottin' like an asshole, fuck that man. Know why, man? 'Cause I'm immortal, man, motherfucking IMMORTAL!!" bullied by jamie flam on 8/6/2002 :: ![]() SPOILER ALERT!!!!! We have the super-secret *ADVANCE SCRIPT* for M. Night Shyamalan's latest, and it is a doozy. Suffice it to say Dreamworks is going all out on this one, and I think it shows on every page... there's a LOT to like. We only have the first few scenes, but I think we can already tell why this is one of the most anticipated adaptions in recent memory. A few minor complaints, none serious enough to keep me from recommending what looks like a franchise that will be with us for a long, long time. Click here for the script, but don't say you haven't been warned.... bullied by jamie flam on 8/5/2002 :: |
